by Stephanie Wilson
(Bluffton,SC)

I have herniated discs in my neck that cause a severe nerve pain down my left arm. Its so very cold, like I have no blood flow. Same goes for my lower back.

You may need to consider surgery
by: Dave

Hi Stephanie, sorry to hear that you're having such a hard time.

You don't give me a much information but I know nerve pain can be miserable. How old are you? Have you ever injured your neck? Do you have any other conditions that may affect the nerves?

The nerves control everything including blood flow. Are you having any color changes in your hand or forearm compared to the other side? Does it feel cold to touch with your other hand? If it seems like the blood flow is OK, it could be that the nerves are just sending the wrong message to your brain causing it to feel cold.

You said that you have herniated discs. How do you know? Have you had an MRI? If it showed herniated discs, did they talk to you about surgery?

When you have a herniated disc that is compressing a nerve and causing symptoms that are intolerable you may need to think about surgery. Another option would be to consider nerve pain medications like gabapentin or pregabalin. But, when a nerve is being squeezed, medications may only have limited benefit.

Keeping us posted and let us know how you're doing.
Dave
