Strengthening your lower back is easy to do and takes only a few minutes per day, but you might do the exercises consistently for a minimum of 7 to 10 days before you notice a benefit.

Your lumbar spine is supported from the back by the large muscles that lie on either side of your spine and in front by your abdominal muscles and the other muscles of your core.

•Begin by lying on your stomach on the floor

•Stretch your arms out above your head

•Raise your head and arms off the floor 

•Hold for a count of 5 then relax

•Keeping your legs straight raise them one at a time

•Hold for a count of 5 then relax

•Repeat 3-5 times 

•Perform 2 sets twice per day

Over The Counter Medications

Topical Treatments 

There are many topical over the counter medications that claim to relieve sciatica pain and I do believe that some of them may be helpful for some people.

These medications are applied directly to the painful area. Many use menthol, capsaicin, or other natural ingredients to provide local anesthesia. They may also contain herbal anti-inflammatory preparations to reduce inflammation and swelling.

Effective for Many People

However, most of them have not been approved by the FDA or evaluated with long-term scientific studies that show proven benefit; so I am hesitant to recommend any specific product.

Having said that, I do believe that many of these treatments can be helpful. While you can have a reaction to any new medication there seems to be little risk of permanent damage or injury.

Perhaps the biggest risk is that it does not help.

Anti-inflammatory Medications

Strong anti-inflammatory medications taken by mouth will help to relieve inflammation and swelling wherever it may be. This can help to relieve the pain of sciatica and from many different causes.
