Yes absolutely, colon cancer pain can radiate to your back.

Hi Caroline, thanks for writing and we are sorry to hear about your problems. To answer your question: Yes absolutely, colon cancer pain can radiate to your back.

Now the next question is what to do about it.

You mention that you are a hairstylist. Are you still working? Standing for long hours can certainly cause back pain. But, if you have been doing that kind of work for many years and just now develop back pain, your work is unlikely the cause.

You don't mention where you are at with your colon cancer. Is it newly diagnosed or has it been treated? Have you had surgery? Chemotherapy? Radiation treatments? Back pain can be a side effect of many different treatments for colon cancer. In any case, it would not be unreasonable to ask your doctor for pain medication or a referral to a pain management provider.

Lastly, you don't mention your age, but anyone over the age of 40 or 50 can have a little back pain once in awhile that really doesn't mean much. Before you start ordering x-rays or MRIs, and before you start trying any new medications (they can all have side effects), I would suggest that you just give it a few days to see what happens.

If the pain persists for more than a few weeks, or if it is severe and prevents normal activity, you can talk to your doctor or oncologist about having it evaluated. Anytime that you have a history of cancer there is always the concern for metastasis to another part of your body. You definitely should not ignore this new pain but watchful waiting for 1 to 2 weeks is not unreasonable.

Well Caroline, I hope that helps. Also, in any case, make sure and at least mention it to your doctor at your next visit. I hope everything goes well for you and please keep us posted on your progress. We really do care.
Good luck and God bless.

Dave
