Symptoms of Kidney Stones
and How to Avoid Them

The pain and other symptoms of kidney stones can make you miserable, but there are things that you can do and things that your doctor can do to help you feel better. Taking the appropriate steps at the first sign of a kidney stone can help prevent a small problem from turning into a large problem.

The most common kidney stones symptom is pain, sometimes very severe pain. The pain may start in the back just below your ribs where the kidneys are located, and gradually migrate to your flank, then on to your abdomen and down into your groin as the stone slowly move through your urinary tract.

"as the stone slowly moves through your urinary tract"

Women talk about the pain of childbirth and how severe it is, but women who have experienced both childbirth and kidney stones often say that the pain of a kidney stone is worse.

"minerals will crystallize into stones"

Kidney stones and symptoms of kidney stones develop when of balance of minerals and water in your urine changes. Normal urine has minerals such as uric acid and calcium dissolved in the water and other fluids.

When there is not enough water or other fluids, or when the mineral content is too high, these minerals will crystallize into stones. The stones are often very irregularly shaped with many sharp edges and corners. When the stones move through the urinary tract the sharp edges may scratch delicate tissues and cause severe pain.

"severity and duration of your kidney stones symptoms will depend"

Lower back pain and other symptoms of kidney stones may be confused with other types of kidney disease or kidney failure. As the pain moves on to your flank and abdomen, your symptoms may be confused with other problems that can cause back and abdominal pain, appendicitis, ovarian cysts, or gallbladder disease.

The severity and duration of your kidney stones symptoms will depend on the size of the stone and the speed with which it moves through your system. You can limit your kidney stones symptoms by drinking enough water.

Avoiding Symptoms of Kidney Stones

"keep yourself well hydrated"

If you allow yourself to be dehydrated you will produce small amounts of concentrated urine. This will help create large stones that move slowly through the urinary tract. Your symptoms will be more severe and last longer.

If you keep yourself well hydrated by drinking large amounts of water and other fluids, you will produce large amounts of very watery urine. This will dilute the mineral content, and avoid the creation of more stones.

"speeding the stones transit"

Adequate volumes of urine will dilate the ureters and fill the bladder, minimizing pain and, speeding the stones transit through your urinary tract. By drinking enough water small stones may not cause any symptoms at all.

Larger stones may cause more severe symptoms such as blood in your urine, fever, and nausea and vomiting. If a large stone blocks your ureter urine will back up into your kidney causing hydronephrosis. If your kidney begins to stretch there may be severe kidney back pain and a risk of permanent injury.

"send you home with instructions to drink more water"

When you are having symptoms of kidney stones, or think you may be having symptoms of kidney stones, it is always important to contact your doctor. He can evaluate you and order the appropriate tests to make sure your symptoms are from kidney stones and not something else.

Your doctor can also help manage your symptoms. He may give you pain medication and send you home with instructions to drink more water. If your symptoms are more severe he may admit you to the hospital for IV pain medication.

When you are hospitalized your doctor can closely monitor your symptoms and if they are not improving he can take appropriate action.

"flush the smaller stones from your urinary tract"

Large kidney stones may be treated with lithotripsy, a procedure that uses sound waves to break the stone into smaller pieces.

You will be encouraged to drink water and other fluids which will help flush the smaller stones from your urinary tract.

Depending on where the stone is, sometimes your doctor can go in with a tiny scope and use a small basket to remove the stone.

If your doctors think the stone is stuck, or it is causing serious problems such as hydronephrosis, surgery may be necessary to quickly remove the stone and prevent permanent injury to your kidney.

"begin drinking plenty of water"

To limit your symptoms of kidney stones, the first step is to begin drinking plenty of water. You can supplement this with juice and other fluids. It may be wise to avoid sports drinks and other drinks with added minerals and electrolytes, as these may contribute to the problem.

If your symptoms are not severe you are probably safe just drinking water and waiting a few days to see if your symptoms get better or worse. If your symptoms prevent normal activities, or if they are getting worse, you need to contact your doctor and be evaluated.

Early and accurate diagnosis is the key to limiting your symptoms of kidney stones.
